This combination that is a perfect energy booster or pick-me-up is made up of:

chinese green tea: known for its detoxifying properties, it is very rich in catechins — antioxidants that help regulate weight— and caffeine that gently flushes out toxins and excess water.
mate: a traditional South American drink that comes from the culture of the indigenous Guarani people. It contains high levels of natural caffeine and antioxidants for a stimulating and detoxifying effect on the body. It has been known for thousands of years to boost the metabolism and for its power as an appetite-suppressant.
açai: also known as “purple gold”, this small berry grows in the tops of palm trees in the Amazon. Very rich in natural antioxidants, macro-and micro-nutrients, açaí berries are high in energy and low in sugar. Its composition and powerful antioxidant properties stimulate the body.

Palais Des Thes Advent Calender Day 1:
I’ve never tried this company before so that’s exciting and really haven’t tried any Parisian tea companies either. The little cloth tea sachet is cute and new to me as well. The smell of this sachet before steeping smells exactly like a DavidsTea tea I’ve tried before. I can’t remember what one but it has to be either a fruit tisane/herbal or a fruity tropical green tea/mate that they offer.
I followed the company’s steeping parameters for this cup.

The taste is quite different than the DavidsTea that I am reminded of though it is mainly the mate that I am tasting. The flavor is light as well which I’ve heard is common of Parisian teas. I can’t taste the green tea really at all but do get some butteriness from it. The passionfruit is quite delicate as well. The sachet mentions acai but I don’t taste that in this tea at all. You can definitely feel the effects of the caffeine from the mate in this one though. I don’t feel the need to purchase this one but it wasn’t a bad cup at all. Just not the most interesting I’d say. I’m not sure what to rate this one yet so my undecided rating is 50. I wish Steepster had a flavor that just said mate. I should have probably drank this earlier in the day since I have a Piano Performance tomorrow morning for school.

This tastes familiar, but I’m having one of those moments where I’ve just tried so many teas that I’m having a bloody challenging time figuring out exactly which one it’s reminding me of. It’s nice for what’s in it; but I’m not meshing with the more buttery and strong/full bodied green tea base. In general, I find that sort of distinct buttered greens note just simply doesn’t compliment something sweet and tropical like passionfruit/mango.

Very “European” feeling though – I’m beginning to build up quite a familiarity with that difference in flavour approach versus a North American type of flavour. Contrasting this against DT’s Green Passionfruit blend would be a good example of this difference…

Palais des Thés Advent Calendar – Day 1 (from November backlog)

Alright, so I’ve decided I should really probably at least try following the company’s steeping instructions for teas, which is something I rarely do. Generally for a green tea like this one, I would only steep it for 3 minutes. However, I’m increasing it to 4 because that’s what the sachet recommends. So here we go!

The green maté dominates the flavor here for me. Which isn’t a bad thing necessarily, as it’s a flavor I enjoy and it does come off as very “spa” or “detox” like. It has a mellow and sweet, slightly earthy herbaceous flavor with perhaps a hint of smokiness. I don’t think I taste green tea here at all. I will admit, I’m not sure I know what either acai or moringa taste like, so I couldn’t tell you if I find them in this cup. I do get passionfruit, but it’s unusual in the fact that it’s quite a soft and sweet passionfruit flavor versus a more zingy note, which is what I generally expect from it.

This is a pleasant enough blend for the afternoon. I feel like if there had been just a little more pop from the passionfruit, it would have improved this a lot. Perhaps even a hint of citrus to add some brightness, grapefruit would be lovely. Anyway, as-is it’s good but not great.

I don’t even look at the company “recommended brewing” much anymore… I have my ways and like to stick to them, heh (and find I disagree heavily with so many of the “recommendations” printed on packages that now it is just my habit to not follow them).

YES, like some green teas always say 4 minutes and I wouldn’t brew ANY type for that long on a first steep, let alone a sensitive green tea. Tea shop instructions almost always seem like they would ruin a tea.

I’m the same way, Alita. Unless it’s a straight tea from a specialist company I generally just go with my default parameters. :P

Last week, I stopped at the Le Palais des Thés (LPDT) shop at Tours on my way from Spain to Belgium, to get me a stock of their brilliant “menthe glacé” tea, and I saw that LPDT is doing a lot of marketing of their new DETOX range. At Tours, they had prepared two of the teas in the range : this Brazilian inspired blend and the Scandinavian blend. First, I tried the Brazilian blend, because it´s really very fragrant. Not a big fan of mate, I thought that this blend sort of fell to pieces when trying it…not even the passionfruit can lift the blend – in mouth – above average, in my opinion.
