From Nio Teas

The ceremonial matcha made by Mr. Nakai comes from the cultivar Okumidori. This superior cultivar is reserved for high-grade Gyokuro, Sencha and matcha. The excellence of this matcha comes from its very round and complete taste with a balance of creaminess, a full body and a fine silky note of fresh spinach and a hint of asparagus. The resulting tea produces a very well-rounded taste with no bitterness. Because of its supreme quality, this matcha is also used for koicha, a thick paste made from only the highest grade matcha.

This farm is located in Wazuka, right outside the old capital of Kyoto. This region is famous for the production of matcha tea. Powdered tea was the original way to consume matcha in Japan, and the first tea plants to be cultivated in Japan were grown right outside Kyoto at Kozanji temple in the Toganoo mountains.

NIO Advent 2023
These small packets of matcha always make me a bit pensive. I suppose if I go into it with little expectation then I can only go up from there. The powder is a nice green color. With a decent aroma. My favorite part so far was when whisking. The aroma was lovely. A bit creamy and a bit vegetal. It froths up nicely; even for someone like myself with tolerable whisking skill. The color of the liquor is a very nice green. A slight bit astringent in the mouth but not to the point of being annoying. It’s also smooth and thus far minimal grit. Very green. Slight bitterness and a bit creamy with vegetal notes. A bit of minerality also shows up when it first touches your tongue. I didn’t taste it right away but as it has cooled it showed up ever slow slightly. The powder is also staying nicely suspended!

This is my first time trying matcha! I’m surprised it’s taken me so long, but I’ve never really explored Japanese green tea and I don’t have the right tools. In line with that, I steeped my 2 g sample in a 180 ml mason jar using 160F water.

After extensive shaking, I get a jar full of very green matcha that even has some foam on the top. Taking my first sip is like having a bunch of veggies hit me in the face. I get kale, spinach, asparagus, brussels sprouts, broccoli, and grass. Cameron is right that there’s no sweetness whatever, though I don’t get any hay or mustiness either. The body is thick and creamy, and did I mention very vegetal? There were some clumps at the bottom of the jar, so I must not have shaken it as well as I thought.

I think matcha might be an acquired taste for me.

Traditional matcha has to be really high quality for me to enjoy it. Otherwise, I like to use it for sweet lattes, usually cold but sometimes hot. And with both traditional and lattes, a small piece of dark chocolate or a little something usually accompanies it.

I would say matcha is definitely an acquired taste.

Ashmanra, chocolate makes everything better, so I wouldn’t be surprised if it worked with matcha. Maybe I should find a bigger jar so I can dilute it a bit.

It is certainly an acquired taste haha. I have found that using the traditional techniques (bamboo whisk to get a froth) help a lot with texture and flavor to my surprise.

Glad I’m not the only one who feels this way! I have a few more matcha samples to go, but I don’t think I’m invested enough to get a traditional bowl/whisk. We’ll see!

Nio Teas Advent Calendar 2022 – Day 24 (1/3)

Happy Christmas Eve, friends! I’m so ready for it to be the last day of advent calendars, heh heh… Especially since today there were THREE teas in my Nio envelope! XD

This matcha has a very strong and noticeable hay note to it, along with a bit of mustiness. Otherwise it has quite powerful and savory vegetal flavors, a combination of spinach, cooked asparagus, and some cruciferous veggies like kale and brussels sprouts. Very thick and creamy in texture as well, and quite smooth. There’s no sweetness to it at all.

Definitely a high-quality matcha, but not my favorite due to the lack of sweeter notes.
