From Nio Teas

This organic Gokou Matcha Koiai comes from the Gokou cultivar. Typically, this is a premium cultivar of matcha powder, known for its nice full-bodied and umami flavour. If you like these bold savory flavors of matcha, this is the best option for you to try. Compared to the Matcha Washimine, this tea is fresher and more full-bodied. It is a very well balanced and flavourful matcha with less astringency. The flavour is quick and straight to the point, but it finishes with a round creamy flavor in the end.

This ceremonial matcha comes to us from the mountains of Shizuoka, Japans largest tea growing region. The farmers of Osada source their tea leaves from small family farms in the organic village of Isagawa to ensure the tea is made with great attention to detail and absolutely no pesticides. We visited these tea farms in April 2019 to see the fields and factories where it was produced in person.

Nio Teas Advent Calendar 2022 – Day 22 (1/2)

So… There were two teas in my Nio advent calendar envelope this morning ha ha. Not sure if that’s just a today thing, or if the two remaining days will also have two. Just what I need, extra advent teas! XD

Ooh, this is a nice one. It’s extremely smooth with almost no bitterness at all. Quite nutty and creamy at the beginning of the sip, with a refreshing grassiness that appears in the middle and dominates toward the end. A touch of astringency comes with the grassiness as well, giving it a more clean and refreshing flavor. The beginning of the sip actually reminds me a bit of eating Cheerios, it has that grainy sort of note to it.

A nice matcha, it’s perhaps a bit subtle in this preparation, but still very enjoyable.

Tea samplers are my bane. A good, good bane. But I have a hard time passing them up.

Smooth with a bit of astringency that makes it somewhat more potent. It is a briskness that is awakening but turns smoothly to umami and bits of vegetal notes. There is a bit of silt at the end with a lingering briskness.

Update: NIO Advent 2023
Mostly the same notes. But an interesting side of asparagus served with this one. This one is good on its own but I think it would also be good as a latte.
