From Moychay

The leaf is picked in the area of Lake Seliger, Tver Region. In the summer of 2018. Twisted on a roller and slowly withered in a special way. The sheet is large, the highest grade. In the aroma and taste there are floral notes. Raw materials were processed gently, which gave a subtle taste to the drink. With aging, the taste will continue to change.

I bought this tea when I finally found an Ivan-chai (willow-herb) from European market and not from Russia or other places that I don’t trust enough.

I had this herb once, in a tea bag form; and since then I think it tastes like black tea, but without caffeine. Well, this one is slightly different. It’s definitely fruitier, somehow like red wine and grapes together, with smooth and round taste, definitely strong though. It is also a bit drying, especially in the aftertaste and tip of the tongue.

Nevertheless, I still like it and sadly it’s not avaiable now. I hope Moychay will have another year of harvest soon; as I think I will get another pouch for the alternative strong cup.

The suggested steeping parameters seems off to me though. I prepared today 6 grams and steeped for 2-3 minutes and… well, it’s the upper limit IMO.

I picked this up after reading about it on the Lazy Literatus’ blog because I was intrigued by a caffeine-free plant with more complex qualities than most herbals. The smell and taste are very fruity, almost too much for my taste. There’s also an interesting undertone of something sharper, maybe mint, almost like some Taiwanese black teas. If I drank this blindfolded I would have thought it was a black tea with added fruit flavor or maybe chrysanthemum flowers. The characteristic bitterness of tea is absent, but it’s still a decently strong and flavorful drink. It’s not replacing my daily drinkers, but I’ll keep this around as an herbal option for the evenings.
