From Mandala Tea

The Yi People of China’s Simao District selected this fine April 2013 picked tea for traditional roasting in clay jars. Their cultural association with fire is tied to the legendary figure Atilaba, who drove away a plague of locusts with pine torches. Expect a fiery cup in terms of flavor and potency. Lovers of Japanese roasted tea will enjoy this.

Jeez, I’m so behind on my posts that I won’t even try to catch up!
This is my 2nd tea of the day, the first one was a pot of Tiger Assam, which was absolutely wonderful with breakfast.

This one is a sample from Garret. It’s a green tea that was roasted in a clay jar, & it’s the flavor is very different to me. It reminds me of something, but I can’t quite place it… roasted green bell peppers & I’m kind of getting some roasted chestnuts in there too. Of course, my tastebuds might be a little out of whack! LOL!

All in all, I’ve gone through several pleasant steepings while teaching, & I’d call this a savory brew. Thanks Garret!

In a clay jar…who thinks this stuff up? (Cool!)

Garret

You are more than welcomed!!! Thanks for writing up your thoughts on it. This has really become a popular tea for us. Some people are really digging this in the tea glass style of brewing, that’s for sure. Lots of repeat buys on this one. Yay!

I steeped mine in my glass test tube steeper!

Wow, this is a very interesting green tea, the likes of which I’ve never tasted. This is a green tea that has been roasted in a clay jar, I believe after traditional processing. Don’t quote me on that.

Very unique roasted flavor. It pairs well with melon and sweet fruits. I’ll post more after my next cup.

Yesterday’s tea.

This little sample from Garret must have gotten a bit lost in my huge collection of teas. I was searching for a green tea yesterday morning and came across this sample.

The dry leaves looked so dark. I would have taken it for a black tea or roasted oolong. The leaves were long and twisted.

This tea was a nice surprise. First thing I noticed was how sweet it was. Sweet, nutty & smooth. Then it’s got this mild roasted flavour to it. It’s nutty & sweet along with the roasted.

I find with oolongs there’s a huge difference between a light oolong and a roasted oolong. I’m just using that example to explain how roasting changes a tea a lot. This was a surprise because all the elements I love in a green tea: nutty, buttery, smooth, chestnut notes, sweet – were all there along with the light roasted flavour….kind of like roasted chestnuts!

I just sorry it took me so long to try this tea. It’s really a great tea!

Even though I have to be up at 5am I desperately needed a cup of tea. This was the first green I saw from my Mandala order so I picked it. I spent this evening at that most frustrating of things, dealing with a salesman over a new car. I used Truecar which turned out to be basically bogus. I think I saved a couple of hundred dollars, not what I was supposed to. They always find a way to put back your supposed savings. They use the strategy of wearing you down and to some degree it works. Thank god I only do this once a decade or so.

This tea is good. It is relatively sweet with a floral, vegetal taste. It also has a roasted taste that is not quite the roasted barley flavor of a wuyi oolong. It is a roasted tea.

I brewed this tea once in an 18oz teapot with 3 tsp leaf and 175 degree water for 1 min.

I wanted one of those! A bit out of my budget at the moment, but maybe next time :)

YS sells some roasted greens as well

Do like I do walk in tell them they have 30 mins to make a deal or walk on them. These guys play the sales game every day so they are better at it than we are. I just tell them my time is just as valuable as theirs and put the limit on them.

I’m not very experienced “roasted” teas. I find that Hojicha’s lose some of the dynamic and interesting deep green tea flavors, which is ok for me because of the satisfying roasty comforting flavor.

This tea has those roasty elements but it still has a lot of green tea flavor. I made this in a tea infuser ball and steeped it for probably around 3 or 4 minutes. The tea was a light amber. The taste started with a roasty warm base, and it had an almost milky mouthfeel and kind of that “green tea funk flavor” The roasted elements of this tea were subdued but it balanced nicely with the other flavors.
Not the best tea I’ve ever had but its something I wouldn’t mind drinking on a regular basis.
