Tea- Black Tea (Not Smoked)
Harvest – Spring 2018
Origin – Tongmuguan, Wuyishan
This tea was produced in Tongmuguan, birthplace of black tea in the 16th century and now a Unesco world heritage protected area where tea trees grow in a pristine environment. Unlike most areas of Wuyishan that are at relatively low elevation, Tongmuguan is situated at a much higher altitude of around 1000mt.
The traditional production of this tea is smoked and is available as Yan Xun Xiao Zhong.
This non smoked version produces a very clean flavor expressing the character of Tongmuguan Xiaozhong. Growing in semi-wild conditions (left to grow style), these trees have to adapt to the environment and produce irregular and ugly leaves with a quite peculiar flavor.
This tea has a balanced taste with a very clean, delicate sweetness and a smooth and cozy mouth feeling. It is low in fragrance and a bit different in taste compared to most chinese hongcha/black tea. The tea soup is a lighter shade not reaching the deep red color. Its qualities are in the balance of flavor and in the soft mouth feeling.

So, my Lapsang binge on the weekend definitely extended into the start of the week as well and I found myself dipping into an unsmoked Lapsang sample from Lazy Cat! This tea was amazing! I certainly expected it to taste good, but was blown away by the strong range of flavour notes I was picking up. Every time I think back to the session, like right now as I right this note, I just find myself drooling thinking about how good it was…
Not sure what I expected this to taste like, but I can say with confidence that “Banana Nut Bread” wasn’t it! It’s delicious though – mild astringency/dryness and nutty notes pair well together – like walnuts with the skins still on, with a hint of maple-y sweetness. Notes of malt, fresh baked bread, and very light creamy banana or plantain. Scrumptious!
