History:

Majestic Jade Green Tea also known as “Liu An Gua Pian” in Chinese is one of the ten classical green teas. It was first labeled as “a national gift” by the beloved Premier Zhou of China during the 1970s. When former Secretary of State Dr. Kissinger first visited China in 1971, Premier Zhou presented the “Jade Tea” as a symbolic gift of friendship between the two nations. In 2007, current Chairman of China, Hu Jingtao brought it to Russia and offered it to President Vladimir Putin as a symbol of moralities — elegance and friendship. Yet, the history of the Majestic Jade Tea traces back hundreds of years before the modern world. The legend foretells that this Gua Pian tea was originally a tribute from the Empress of Heaven(a legendary goddess) to Kuan Yin( the goddess of mercy), but was instead brought down to earth by the messenger who disobeyed the Empress, instead used as plants to restore a land of desolate for men, so that teas and other crops could grow again. It rode along the Chinese history, but was most popular during the Manchu Dynasty around the 1600s till the 1900s. Manchu’s emperor’s wife Tai Hsi even demanded the Jade tea as a tribute monthly. In the 18th century’s novel Dream of the Red Chamber, one of China’s Four Great Classical Novels, complemented the “Liu An Gua Pian” tea as “a taste of the majestic jade”, thus came the name we use today.

Ingredients and Procedures:

Majestic Jade Green Tea is gathered from the mountains and processed with care. It is the only green tea that requires the removal of tea buds and tea stalks. Therefore, the only parts left are pure tea leaves. Then fried for five times with different durations of fire, each shaped as a melon seed with the color of verdure green, just like a jade stone, it brings a refreshing taste and an expression of elegancy.

Found this sample bought from a stash sale on reddit and was too lazy to add it to my spreadsheet, so I decided just to drink it. Thus, this is a sipdown.

Brewed 2 tsp leaf in 250 mL gaiwan with 86 deg C water, 1 minute.

I really like how smooth the green tea is. It is a bit nutty, definitely green (but not vegetal), and floral/fruity. I don’t know what melon seeds ara supposed to taste like, but this isn’t distinctly melon. I would describe it as being closer to unroasted pumpkin seeds (nutty), light hints of jasmine (due to a jasmine tea it was shipped with?), and a bit fruity/sweet. No bitterness or astringency at all, it is super smooth.
