From Kiani Tea

In Traditional Ayurvedic Medicine (TAM), the pigeon wing flowers have been used for centuries as a medicine to improve cognitive function. The flower contains acetylcholine which has nootropic properties. Nootropic helps boost memory, focus, creativity, intelligence, and motivation.

Acetylcholine decreases with age, which can cause loss of memory. Consumption of Pigeon Wing Flower can reverse this process and help boost your brainpower, as it contains high levels of acetylcholine. It can help you to remember things better, to think more clearly, be more attentive and manage things better. Although you can buy drugs for cognitive enhancing, we whole heartedly believe, the natural kinds are better.

Naturally high in anxioxidiants and anthocyanins, (the same kind as found in blueberries) it can help to reduce the presense of harmful free radicals and promote cellular health. It also contains anti-inflammatory properties. Good to be enjoyed on its mixed with water or milk of your choice.

Brewing Idea

To be whisked and made like any other matcha. Place approx. 1-2 scoops of matcha in your bowl, then wet with 15ml of max 70ºC water or milk. Thoroughly knead mixture using bamboo whisk until smooth paste forms. Add remaining 70ml of water or your choice of heated milk and mix until consistent. Optional: Add honey or sugar for enhancing flavour.

You can mix blue butterfly pea powder into many treats. Why not mix a small spoon into your smoothie, porridge, or bowl of yogurt?

The Pigeon Wing Flower

Also known as, Clitoria Ternatea, Asian Pigeon Wings, Bluebellvine, Blue pea, Cordofan Pea, and Darwin pea. A girl has many names… We appropriately named her Fujian Pigeon Wing on the occasion of celebrating Fujian Matcha (she is made in Fujian with flowers from Yunnan). She smells divine like tropical flowers (because she is one) and boasts so many health benefits that it would be a shame not to introduce her to your teacup.

Day 17 of the Kiani advent calendar. It’s not a big deal, but I find it mildly annoying to call things that aren’t matcha, matcha. It’s fine to just call it dragonfruit powder, white tea powder, and pigeon wing/butterfly pea flower powder! That would be simultaneously more accurate and less confusing. But by this point in the calendar I know to look things up on the website for more detailed information and instructions (which, to be fair, I would have had to do with the DavidsTea calendar too except that those were all herbal blends and I gave them all more or less the same treatment).

I mixed this up as an iced oat milk latte. Flavor-wise, I find this a weird choice for a powder, in part because I find it a weird choice for a straight tisane. The website explains the ayurvedic health benefits, which is all well and good, but not generally why I drink tea. It’s earthy but also mild. The creaminess of the oat milk at least adds some heft and substance to the cup, but I wonder whether it’s not also drowning some of the flavor. Which is maybe not a bad thing.

Sipdown (1548)!

This was a free sample included in my advent order from Kiani tea and, well, to be perfectly honest and blunt it just was not good. I think there’s something to be said about the few pros: the liquor colour is a gorgeous deep blue/indigo colour and it frothed up excellently. However, the reality is that butterfly pea flower generally just doesn’t taste good and so straight ground butterfly pea flower is exceptionally worse. Very chalky and alkaline mixed with bitter almost kale-like notes.

Could maybe see it working as a SMALL addition to another matcha or flavoured tea or something like a smoothie, though.
