From Harney & Sons

About 30 years ago, friend and colleague Andrew Demmer decided to mix dried fruit and flavors together for his tea shops in Vienna, Austria. These blends were not from the tea plant, were caffeine-free, and were refreshingly delicious. Andrew decided to call them fruit teas. They have become popular in Middle Europe and now here in the States. Our selection of fruit tea blends brews up a wonderful red color and has vibrant flavors. Caffeine-free.

Ingredients: Rose hips, hibiscus, apple pieces, orange peel, goji berries, blueberry flavor, raspberry flavor.

Sipdown! (37 | 103)

This was the only fruit tisane from Harney that I hadn’t tried, so I figured I’d pick up a tin when I was reordering the other flavors.

Sadly, I don’t enjoy it as much as the others. I think it must be the blueberry flavoring that’s giving me a powdery note, which I sometimes get with mixed berry teas. It reminds me a bit of Smarties, and not in a good way. Not to say it’s bad, as I did finish the whole tin over the course of 4 or 5 cold-steeped bottles, it’s just not as nice as the others (IMO). Pretty tin though!

This is delish.

First of all, I overleafed and the color is quite something. It’s a very deep, opaque red. Rather like a cabernet, only even less translucent. I feel almost like a vampire.

I confess, I wouldn’t know a goji berry if it hit me over the head, but I have to assume at least part of what I’m smelling and tasting is goji. There’s also a rather strong blueberry flavor and smell which could be cloying, if not for the citrus and hibiscus tartness tempering it. I can also taste and smell a whiff of the raspberry and apple if I try really hard.

But it sort of defeats the purpose to try that hard, because it’s the mix of all these ingredients together that’s really tasty. It’s like a hot, tart, fruit punch that is quite comforting on a cold, rainy night.

This is probably not for everybody — hibiscus haters should stay away. I’ve come not to hate hibiscus. It serves a purpose if done right, i.e., cutting through the cloying, but it’s taste-able in this blend. Also, although the flavoring doesn’t taste artificial to me, I can see that people who are sensitive to such things might find the flavors a bit overdone.

But I rather like being hit over the head with all this berry/citrus goodness.

Hmmm, SuperAnna likes hibiscus. Sounds like a good tea to serve at her Annaween celebration!

This is very heavy on the blueberry and raspberry flavor, but there’s a hint of citrus that’s a nice touch. I just have a sample, but I might repurchase this summer. I’m sure it’d make a great Arnold Palmer.
