From Green Terrace Teas

While most Bi Luo Chun is grown in Jiangsu Province, China, this unique cultivar grown in Taiwan has bigger leaves and is picked slightly earlier in the year. As a non-fermented green tea, it is rich in antioxidants and other natural chemicals that promote various health benefits, including reducing the risk of cardiovascular disease and cancer. Bi Luo Chun is sweet and fruity in flavor, with notes of peach and a mildly vegetal aftertaste. Avoid steeping too long or in water that is too hot for the best taste and health benefits. We recommend brewing with multiple short infusions of about 30 to 40 seconds.

Lovely!

This is different from a Chinese Bi Luo Chun (and I guess it should be, seeing as it’s a Taiwanese Bi Luo Chun). It looks different and it tastes different.

This is lovely – buttery, sweet, slightly vegetative. The buttery notes are strong and creamy. The sweetness is fruit-like. There is a slightly dry astringency toward the tail.

This Bi Luo Chun is from Taiwan so it is a little different from one for the mainland of China. It is dryer dark green leaves. That doesn’t stop it from being smooth and soft in the mouth. It has a bit of a vegetable taste and finishes dry in the mouth. Not harsh at all and very relaxing of a drink

Continuing to expand my concept of Bi Luo Chun, I decided to take up a completely different version this one from Taiwan, courtesy of Green Terrace Teas.

What a surprise. First off, the dried leaves look exactly like a number of Mao Fengs: dark matte green, crispy, spindly, and relatively long. This is Bi Luo Chun? Who knew?

The brew, too, reminds me of Mao Feng! Maybe I should not be that surprised, since all tea is, at bottom, camellia sinensis. I have already experienced two completely opposite forms of Bi Luo Chun: one is a compact, tightly rolled up little snail shell which unfurls upon infusion; the second is fluffy, almost weightless, very voluminous and has light colored, almost ashen tips.

This is a third version altogether. I noticed that the infused leaves are quite a bit darker than typical infused Mao Feng leaves, so this is definitely identical with that tea, but the similarities are patent. The flavor is definitely more robust and vegetal than the other Bi Luo Chuns I’ve tried, but I happen to like Mao Feng, so I am happy with this tea!

Thanks, Ubacat! I’m trying to develop a concept of Bi Luo Chun, but it’s not easy given the variety! ;-) Nothing like the clear-cut categories of Long Jing or Sencha or milk oolong, all which are readily and immediately identifiable.

This is an interesting Bi Luo Chun. There is a peachy flavor and a buttery note that reminds my of Oolong, but there is also the vegetal note that reminds me of snap beans. It seems like these flavors shouldn’t work together, but they do. Not only do they work, but they blend to create a very enjoyable tea. I’ve had multiple infusions of this now, and each cup has been consistently delicious.

What a wonderful tea to have on a quiet Sunday morning. This tea is like the early morning mist in the mountain countryside that creeps in ; giving an awe inspiring view and then slowly slides back out as the bright early morning sun rises.

The beautiful dry leaves smell so sweet and mossy. I had to just enjoy the smell of them before brewing. Brewed at 195F for 1 min. Then I noticed they recommend shorter steeps. On my 2nd infusion I did only 40 sec.

What an amazing green tea. It was so sweet , buttery, & mossy. Just so fresh tasting. Both steeps were very light tasting. I loved it so much I kind of wanted more of the taste to come through; but maybe that’s what makes it so wonderful – the light taste. I definitely would consider buying this one.
