From Den's Tea

Blending Sencha with Matcha is very popular in Japan. In some products the blending is done to mask the low quality of the Sencha. Our blend uses premium quality Sencha and Matcha resulting in a tea that is flavorful for both the first and second cup.

Origin: Sencha: Shizuoka/Matcha: Nishio
Harvest: First Flush 2010
Species: Yabukita

Tasting Profile:
You can enjoy two flavors. Matcha’s sweetness with the first cup and Sencha’s fresh flavor with the second cup.

Den’s Preferred Brewing:
Water: 3oz @ 180F
Leaves: 2 grams or 1 rounded teaspoon
Steep: 60 sec
2nd Cup: Water boiled ; Steep 15 sec

This came as the tea for their Lucky Gold Tea. The color is a lime green which is surprising because of the matcha. This is a sweeter version of mecha. The matcha gives it a lovely, thick mouth feel. The one thing I can’t figure out though, is if this is just premium sencha dusted w/ matcha why are the steeping parameters different from those of premium sencha? I’ve also never seen a tea that is suggested to be steeped for a shorter time for the 2nd infusion so that’ll be interesting…

I was quite hesitant to do the 2nd infusion at 15 sec as the website suggests, but I was shocked that it wasn’t much lighter in liquor or flavor than the 1st.

mm this sounds interesting!

Cofftea

3rd infusion, 20 sec. almost identical to infusion 2.

Cofftea

4th infusion, 25 sec. Still a very good cuppa although there’s definitely more sencha then matcha by now.

Cofftea

5th infusion, 30 sec. Progressively sweeter.

Cofftea

6th infusion, 40 sec. 1st Liquor that’s noticeably lighter. Not as sweet, a bit astringent which gives the flavor palet depth and complexity.

Cofftea

7th infusion, 1 min. Very light, but still good. Astringent, yet sweet. Calling these leaves done. The only thing I hate about finely chopped leaves like this is that they’re a slimey mess after a few infusions.

I finished this up today. It was a good tea! I love the matcha in here and the bright green brew! Very colorful and very much like spring. It is a bit astringent, even with my shorter steep time. Overall, a good green tea. Not my favorite though. The only other matcha green blend that I’ve tried and absolutely love is genmaicha with extra matcha.

I received 10g of this, as it was recently the “sample of the month”. 10g is such a big amount of tea to give away for free! It’s enough for at least 4 (4oz) cups!

Anyway, the matcha makes this tea very intense. I can see why I’m not a regular matcha drinker — not that I don’t think it’s delicious, because it is — but because as soon as I took the first few sips, I could already feel it!

The matcha adds a nice, intensity — sweetness and even marine flavors — to the already well-balanced sencha. The 2nd and third steepings were yummy too. I try to limit caffeine intake, so I’m not sure I’d buy 2oz of this, but I’d consider it, because it’s like two different teas in one and I enjoy both. (Plus, its an easy way to get to drink matcha without having to buy all the other fiddely tools)

This was my first authentic green tea. I liked it and am enjoying each cup a little more. I’ve been using too little tea for the amount of water, so I’m looking forward to my next session. Even with the amount I’ve been using, the cup has been flavorful and the 2nd steeping has been almost as good as the first. I don’t have much to compare it to yet, but it is quite mild in comparison to the astringent Mecha (http://www.denstea.com/index.php?main_page=index&cPath=102_116) I’ve also tried.

Sample sipdown!

I’m an awful horrible person when it comes to brewing Japanese greens. I look at the steeping instructions – 3 oz for 1 tsp, for 1 minute, say – and say “Eff that!”

So I took the entire little packet I had of this (I think it was a swap from Jude? Or Ost?) and put the whole thing into my 24 oz teapot, brewed for 1 minute at 70ish.

The resulting liquor was a murky pea green and tasted umami and seaweedish and grassy and even slightly creamy from the matcha.

Technically I suppose I could get a second steep out of this, but I’m happy either way to have sipped down something else from the cupboard.

Since I had more coffee than tea today, so I had this.

It’s called extra green… and it really is. The colour is green, the scent is green, it even tastes green. There is an interesting green flavour. I like both sencha and matcha, but I’m not sure how well it goes together.
