From DAVIDsTEA

Nothing makes the world go round like an ice cream sundae. But did you know they were actually invented to evade the law? In late 1800s America, selling ice cream soda was illegal. So a bunch of sweet-toothed bootleggers swapped out soda for syrup – and the sundae was born. Our frosty green tea version tastes like mint chocolate chip freedom. With fresh peppermint, rich cocoa nibs and sweet white chocolate, it’s a divinely refreshing treat. Chip chip hooray!

Ingredients: Cocoa nibs, green tea, peppermint, white chocolate (sugar, c ocoa butter, milk powder, whey powder, lactose, soy lecithin, natural vanilla), cocoa powder, stevia extract, natural flavouring.

Price: $9.98 per 50g

Wasn’t really sure what to expect with this tea, although I was hoping it would taste something like the candy cane ice cream I remember from when I was younger (I’m not big on ice cream, so I haven’t had it in years since I don’t buy it). Luckily – it actually does taste like that, in an unsweetened way. Nice, fresh, creamy mint with no gross peppermint leaf flavour, despite their obvious inclusion. I’m not really getting chocolate/cocoa, but the white chocolate is definitely adding a creaminess (and a bit of an oily scum, but it’s nothing like what sprinkles leave). The base is completely unremarkable/drowned out by the mint. This reminds me a lot of some chocolate mint rooibos I’ve had in the past, except no icky rooibos flavour! Since I’m making this comparison, perhaps I am tasting more chocolate than I thought?

Overall, I think this tea is pretty decent. Rather Christmassy IMO, so I’m drinking it out-of-season, but it does taste like mint ice cream. Not a favourite for me, but I think it’s pretty solid.

I so wanted to love this tea – mint chip – what’s not to love? Especially after a sniff of the loose leaves, minty, chocolatey, creamy- Yumm! The steeped product however left me a bit disappointed. The mint flavour is there for sure, but the chocolate and creamy is a bit lost. Maybe a blessing because if you try to steep it longer you get artificial chocolate flavour, yuck, or the bitter flavour that comes with over steeping green tea. Overall it’s not a bad tea, just a let down based on the wonderful first impression of the scent.

Trick or Treat! This is another tea I picked up during Ost’s cupboard sale (thanks Ost!) and this one I have enough for a few cuppas. I’m surprised how much the dry leaf aroma does remind me of mint chocolate chip ice cream. There just seems to be a sort of sweet creaminess coming out in the aroma that is selling it that I haven’t noticed in, say, choco-mint rooibos blends or other choco-mint teas I’ve had in the past.

The brewed tea is deeply yellow, a bit oily on top, and doesn’t smell quite so creamy as it did in dry-leaf form, but still smells smells very sweet and choco-minty. The flavor is a bit like a very sweet mint, and while the chocolate isn’t a pronounced flavor, there is a note there that reminds me of chocolate chips… the combined flavor does taste strikingly like chocolate mint ice cream. I think the only thing really missing is there is a lack of creaminess to the mouthfeel, as the base is green tea, and while I don’t really taste the base at all, it does create a very light tea. I don’t typically make lattes of greens, but I’m almost curious enough to try it no a subsequent cup just to see if a little milk can add that creamy component I’m desiring.

But on flavor alone, I’m happy. The sweet mint and subtle chocolate notes are nice, and it comes out with a more pronounced refreshing peppermint flavor than other choco-mint teas I’ve tried, which I’m really enjoying.

A nice dessert tea. The green tea isn’t very pronounced.

A delicious hot alternative to a bowl of mint chip ice cream. Add a bit of milk to this to make it even more decadent.

A while back, I made the grave mistake of making this tea iced a mistake I will never repeat again. Iced it was odd and had a very weird sludgy film that crusted the top of the pitcher.

This morning, I made this hot and I do not regret it at all. I only wish that I had a piece of chocolate cake to enjoy it with other than my regular bowl of cereal. Opening that tin and smelling the dried leaf is blissful as the aroma of mint chocolate wafts in your face. The tea brews a cloudy muddy tan colour and smells like typical green tea with mint under tones. I love the taste though, it is a smooth green tea flavour with a minty tingly aftertaste.

I may not drink this often, nor will it be my go to tea, but I will keep it around for the rare occasion that I want something sweet and warm.

Going into this, I already knew I wasn’t going to be a fan because of the stevia, and seeing the white chocolate curls conjured up images of oil slicks on my tea. Now, I love white chocolate actually, but it’s been an annoying flavour to capture in a tea. That cocoa butter in hot water is a little dicey.

The cocoa notes aren’t as strong in here as I would have liked. This reminds me of a seasonal tea from the past. White Chocolate Frost? I appreciate the peppermint notes in here, and the vague attempt at pairing it with white chocolate, but it’s that damn stevia that is ruining the experience. I really, truly, want to poll the shit about of DAVIDsTEA customers, and find out, quantitatively, just how many people actually enjoy the stuff, because I find it hard to believe that enough of their demographic like it enough to justify putting it in so many blends.

No more stevia tears for the day, I promise.

Or just a poll to see if we can get rid of sugar and substitutes from the teas. If you want sugar/stevia in your tea you can add it yourself. That said I do have a soft spot for some of the sugary teas even when they make my teeth hurt. (looking at you cotton candy)

Fjellrev

Seriously, as a rule, if you like sugar, add it to your liking. Period. But I hear you that there are a couple that I do like that have sugar added in them, such as Chocolate Macaroon and Cardamom French Toast, although even then, they could dial it back a bit and I’d still like it just as much since I noticed that a lot of the sugar falls to the bottom of the tin/bag anyway.

I love the taste of chocolate and mint combined, so I got 50 grams of this when it was on sale and wasn’t disappointed. It’s smooth and has a hint of both the mint and chocolate, as well as the usual green tea taste. It really reminds me of mint chocolate chip ice-cream (which I love). If anyone likes those flavours it’s a must have!

Sipdown (321)

I have had this once before and hated it because of the stevia. Today, I am trying it as a latte in hopes that the milk will cover up the stevia. One thing I noticed is a layer of green slime just under the milky foam. It is a little slimey but not terribly so. Flavorwise, the mint is strong but medicinal with a dusty chocolate note underneath. Unfortunately, the milk is not as useful as I hoped because the stevia seems to build with the creaminess making for a slick and cloying beverage that just isn’t for me. I dumped the mug after a few sips if I am being honest.
