This is a very unusual tea. Picked during the autumnal flush, the leaves are given an extra bake during processing which lends the infusion its smoky character. The Sandakphu Estate focuses on Orthodox teas (whole leaf tea, as opposed to the dusty CTC or ‘crush, tear and curl’ tea), and the processing of this tea has to be spot on to get the level of delicate smokiness just right.

The raw leaves are thin, long and very curly with dark green and silver colours. The leaves look to be of good quality with no stems, holes or discolouration. They have a very thick smell of smoky wood, flowers, nutty and green.
First steep – 1 minute – Pale yellow in colour with a thick, earthy and vegetal. It smells very much like raw pu erh. Flavour is smoky, thick, green, astringent, sweet and vegetal. The strength mellows quickly which leaves a nice balance of smoke, sweet pea, grass and cabbage.
Second steep – 2 minutes – Sweeter and more vegetal but still with a light and smoky balance. It’s not as strong as I thought it was going to be after the amazing first steep. Also more grassy and what’s that… pistachio?
Third steep – 3 minutes – Very gentle now. All that is left is sweet, green cabbage and a hint of smoke.
It remained smooth and fresh throughout and echo’s many raw pu erhs that I have on my shelf. A very pleasant green tea and one that I will happily drink.
