Our 2016 Secret Garden raw puer is made from old tree (100+ year) material buried 2.5+ hours deep in a forest, just a little outside of Yiwu. Much of this tea’s uniqueness is owed to its remote location and lack of human interference. The tea produces a good huigan and has a unique fragrance that is easily noticed towards the upper-back part of the mouth. There is a little roughness, but this tea is not too abrasive or bitter, and has great “cha qi”/tea energy.
The garden is located just above a river, with wild banana trees scattered around it and plenty of sunlight. While we don’t detect any noticeable banana flavour in this tea, it certainly has a special and indescribable aroma that sets it apart. As villages and various areas in Yunnan all try to develop a reputation in order to drive the price of their tea up, this is one of those hidden gems that is certainly deserving, but that we hope stays under the radar for a little longer.

white2teaI would say this sheng is good, but not great. The dry leaf had a floral and lightly vegetal aroma. After the rinse, there was a bit of apricot fruitiness, with some slightly deeper floral notes. I found this one to be pretty easy drinking, with a lot of fruitiness that you can often find in young sheng, but also a pretty good helping of flowery flavors as well. I think I may have perceived a bit more of that than there really was, with it being called Secret Garden and all. The huigan was nice, but I didn’t feel too much of anything in terms of qi. If pushed, it can get a touch bitter, but not too bad.
Again…a nice one, but not too memorable for me.

I’ve already gone through half of this beeng, so I’ll hold the rest of it off to see how it tastes with a bit of aging.

2, ~10s — similar, with a bit of tongue tingle coming in, and a slight bit more floral.
3, ~15s — more tingling, still creamy. i think i really like this tea, despite it being more savoury than i usually think of my preferences as. there’s also a chance i’ve cooked it somewhat — my temperature control is not fantastic at the moment. bitterleaf is becoming fairly dangerous to my wallet.
keeps going along the same lines; a bit more astringency creeping in but nothing massive. some fluffy dry mouth afters, with some mouth&throat cooling/mintiness.
