From Adagio Teas

Our Irish Breakfast combines hearty black teas from Ceylon (Sri Lanka) and Assam (India) to get your morning off to a bright start. As its name implies, Irish Breakfast black tea blend is an ideal accompaniment to a morning meal. It seamlessly blends the citrusy notes of a high-grown Ceylon with the malty underscore of a pungent Assam. Spicy and jammy aroma on the leaf, malty and deep flavor with a brisk and ‘buzzy’ mouthfeel. Rounded sweetnessRead more

Jammy, malty, sweet and aromatic, my experience with Adagios Irish Breakfast blend was delightful! I brewed the full sample portion from an assortment box just as directed, in 10 oz boiling water for 2 min. (The lot number on this pouch was smudged in the first digit, but appears to be 84946. ) Because the leaf was pretty finely chopped (2-3 mm bits), it brewed up fast, but surprisingly free of tannin or astringency! Adagio hit a home run with this one, which I’ll rate as 90 and definitely recommend and buy again. [EDIT: two subsequent purchases of this product were each different and inferior— see additional review attached.]

It’s a palatable Irish breakfast, but no matter what I try, the malty flavor is sadly overshadowed by the astringent flavors. Darn you tannins—foiled again! I may pick up some dairy free milk for the remainder of this tea, in order to smooth out the astringency.

It’s so terribly sad, because the scent in the tin promises such a delightful experience that one would like to expect from an Irish Breakfast blend. Malty and warm. Same with the scent in the cup.

Alas, the hunt continues!

The more times I drink this tea the more I think I detect some sort of citrus type note behind it. It is rather faint but it’s there. I’m also learning to reduce my steep time with this one as it can get overly strong pretty fast. This one also doesn’t steep as well a second time. All in all it is still a good black tea that pairs well with meals.
