From Adagio Teas

Oolong tea from Taiwan. Formosa, meaning ‘beautiful’ was what the Dutch explorers called this island. The oolong teas grown here continue to be called as such. The least processed of these are termed pouchong. The ‘Opus Pouchong’ is a lightly oxidized tea with large, wavy, dark-green leaves. It is arguably the most delicate tea produced in Taiwan, a country known for its share of delicate teas. It yields a light cup with delicate fragrance and a gentle, precociously sweet taste. An underrated tea we urge you not to overlook.

Ingredients: Pouchong oolong tea

Steeping Instructions: Steep at 195° for 2-3 minutes.

Ok, and now about 10 minutes later…
This has a very faint floral scent and a nice buttery flavor. It reminds me a bit of some green teas with a bit of vegetal flavor on top of the butteriness. It’s not the most amazing pouchong I’ve ever had but for the price it’s pretty decent! Nice understated florals. I think the 2nd steep may end up impressing me a bit more.

Also don’t eat a bunch of freshly grated garlic in a dressing. Kills the tastebuds for quite a while…

Aiko

When I first read this I thought it was “Punchong” and envisioned an spicy oolong for some reason. I need some sleep.

Claire

Aiko – someone needs to make this now. Spicy pouchong = punchong!

It’s a very light mossy smell this time. Infusion 3. 10 mins. The leaves are finally fully expanded. The taste is wonderful. Sweet. Could prob do more infusions but I think I am going to move on after this. YUM.

Cofftea

Gonna move on because you’re tired of the flavor or just getting impatient waiting for it to steep?:)

TeaEqualsBliss

Well…it’s VERY good…just want a different type tea. You know me and variety! LOL

Cofftea

I just ordered this. What do you suggest for the water temp and steeping time of the 1st infusion?

TeaEqualsBliss

Between 180 and 200 for about 4-5 mins

My 1st pouchong! While I’ve wanted to try this I wasn’t intenting to get it yet, but I really wanted to try the superior jasmine pearls (a once in a life time chance most likely), so I decided to order this as I’ve heard so many good things about the coconut pouchong. I got this instead because I personally don’t like coconut.

The raw leaves are very green in color so I decided to drop the steeping time down to 3 min from the suggested 5 as I prefer some greens (the general “Here. It’s a green, steep it at 3 min” type green) and some oolongs at 3 min. I’ll do it at 5 next time and compare.

The liquor is an extremely light green w/ just a tinge of yellow and the aroma is just as light. This is one of those teas that you almost have to inhale to smell. The flavor, although very light, is sweet and clean. Another tea to add to my “gotta have!” list and I think I may reserve a Yixing for it!:)

mmm pouchong! tis my fav!

Cofftea

2nd infusion 4 min. This warmed me up after my shower. Liquor and aroma are both stronger versions of the 1st infusion. Ooooh! This is so good. Tastes like an infusion of half green and half oolong. A green type tea w/ all the complexities you’d expect from an oolong.

JustDuckyInNE

I’ve planned to try Pearls for years but balked at the prices. After reading your review, I think I’ll go find some. Thanks for the tip!

Aaron Harrison

i’m really glad you liked it. I always brew this with my yixing tea pot, and it really makes the leave extend to their full potency.

Cofftea

JGWamsat, what do you mean “try Pearls”?

Ricky

Ahh, cofftea was talking about Adagio’s Superior Jasmine Pearls which are limited edition (offered during a 2 hour twitter promotion) and won’t be released until the summer.

Eric Walter

one of the best oolongs out there!

Cofftea

Thanks Ricky, I was really confused why JGWamsat was talking about a pearl tea when this tasting note is about a pouchong.

I changed my rating I love this tea so much! I can’t get enough of it, I want to bathe in this stuff.
Going on my FIFTH steep today of the same leaves. Holy Hojicha! That’s a lot of Pouchong! “Damn gurl yo leaves still got dat flavaa!” – me. I’m sipping it as you read~

I’m getting low on my sample of this and I have to fork out some money to get a tin or I’ll have withdrawals. No, I’m not kidding it’s love. If Pouchong were a person I’d bake it a cake and give them a kissu.
Yes. Ahh. It’s a warm hug in a cup, it really is.

So I’ve been seeing people on here posting little things about their lives as they tealog, I guess I’ll jump on the bandwagon.

So I had an exam in my physical anthropology class today. Ugh ugh ugh. That class sucks, the tests are always super hard too. But I think that I survived it, with a B I’m hoping.

Then my friend started acting weird today. He’s suddenly uncomfortable with this other guy that we all hang out with coming to my house, weird. I told him that I wasn’t going to uninvite him, I trust the guy and everyone else including him is going to be there anyways. Ugh, his panties are in a knot because the other guy has a couple different interests than all of us. Seriously? Grow up man! We’re in college!

Sorry for the vent. Pouchong’s helping me relax though. :)
Tell me if I shouldn’t post this in here and I’ll edit it.
See ya cuties!

TheTeaFairy

No worries, you can always vent here, not a problem! We’re a bunch a good listeners :-)

Awws thank you TeaFairy. You’re a sweetheart.

The leaves smell really vegetal – I’m not sure what exactly… almost like squash leaves.
They are long and curled and twisted up – really neat looking.
Brewed this smells JUST like buttered brussels sprouts. I love it. Super awesome.
This has a nice toasty flavor and a touch of mild astringency that lingers as mouthfeel. After all that, a buttery flavor and feeling lingers on the tongue. I love this tea :)
I steeped it for 2 minutes for the first steeping.

For the second steeping I did another 2 minutes. The second brewing is much lighter, and to be honest, I didn’t think much about it. That doesn’t mean I didn’t like it, I was just distracted while I drank it.
I’m putting together the press materials for my film right now, and that’s occupying much more of my brain than tea analysis right now :P

Pouchong may have been the first oolong I ever tasted, because it’s the ‘default’ taste I think of whenever I hear ‘oolong.’ It’s lightly vegetal, and almost like a green tea except it doesn’t have the sharpness. A little floral, but not to the point that a specific flower could be named. I like it because it’s a very fresh and clean flavor.

Cofftea

This stuff is so good!

Mmm, this is really hitting the spot tonight.

There’s slightly more astringency than I remember, but the quietness is just what I needed after a hard week. It’s a light oolong that I have learned to appreciate.

Beautiful looking tea. After 2 infusions, the leaves really open up. Wonderful sweet taste matched with an almost buttery mouthfeel. Light yellow liquor. Definitely, one of the more sweeter oolongs I’ve brewed.

Oh no, I’m almost out! I may have not used enough leaf for this session, in an effort to stretch out my remaining stash, but steeping in my little yixing for about a minute yielded a brew that was light yellow and slightly fragrant. But it was the mouthfeel that was truly lovely. I took the first sip and the flavor seemed less than extraordinary, and was about to put my cup down, worried that maybe my stash was already too old, or that I’d underbrewed. But when the tea rolled around in my mouth I was taken aback at how silky it was! So I had to take a second sip and then another, and soon I was on my 2nd brew. Good stuff. Baozhong (along with Alishan) is definitely one of my staple teas now.

Maybe I’m just untrained to the taste of oolongs but this tea was very delightful and I really enjoyed it. Very light and delicate. Will continue to resteep in hopes of finding more complexities.
