From 52teas

This tea is so lovely! A fresh tasting, sweet Japanese Sencha is paired with Pineapple for this simple yet tasty blend.

I wanted to duplicate (as closely as possible) my morning tea experience – which involves pineapple juice & Matcha powder. That’s my morning routine in a teacup (well, actually, I mix it together in one of those nifty shaker cups) – it’s invigorating & gives me the gusto I need to get going, plus I get the benefits ofRead more

TTB Review #47: Yay, a pineapple tea that doesn’t taste like juice! Really though, I’m quite happy with the amount of flavor that comes through here and that it doesn’t leave me wondering if I’m still drinking a tea. Still has a fairly astringent taste but not unpleasant by any means.

I don’t personally prefer this sencha. I just find it too grassy and loud compared to other green teas that blend more smoothly into the background. I steeped this for two minutes as recommended, but it still tastes a bit bitter. This tea smells absolutely amazing. The pineapple flavor is probably the most authentic I’ve ever encountered in a tea – just like biting into a fresh juicy pineapple. I only wish it were paired with a base I enjoyed!

I would recommend maybe either steeping it a little less time – or perhaps use an even lower temp to steep it. It’s a Japanese Sencha so it has a more pronounced flavor (not so sweet and creamy as a Chinese Sencha, it’s more of a distinct green note). I tend to like that about Japanese Sencha, I like the well-defined vegetal note of Japanese Sencha but I do know that not everyone does. My brewing suggestions are developed based upon what I tend to prefer, but you may find that you enjoy it more if you were to go with a slightly lower temperature (I’m not sure what temperature you used here) or if you steep it at 1 1/2 minutes or even 1 minute.

(52teas (Anne) 2022: 279)

I opened the packet of this tea and was absolutely blasted with pineapple. Yum! Unfortunately, I think I may have overleafed a tad, not considering the fine leaf, and my cup is a bit unpleasantly strong. If I was feeling more motivated right now, I’d try diluting it, as I think that’s all it needs.

Anyways, flavour is pretty good (when I only take a small sip, haha). Strong, clear pineapple with a strongly umami/buttery/mariney green base. It’s just a bit drying but I’m 99% sure that’s because of the overleafing; it’s not bitter at all.

I particularly love that this is not a base that Anne typically uses – although a pineapple sencha isn’t a tea I’d pick out myself, I feel like there might be some other winning combos out there using the same base. Maybe… blackberry sencha? Blueberry? Lavender? Vanilla lemon? The possibilities are endless!

ETA: So I resteeped this one in a little bubble teacup, as I always do. Had a sip; it tasted alright. Left it until morning. Drank in the morning and omg, it was like a different tea. Heavily, heavily umami and pineapple, no astringency, nothing. Left the most amazing umami flavour in the mouth. This is not the first time I’ve had this happen with a tea, where it improves overnight, but dang. It was so delicious.

I drank this up too quickly and desperately to get a good read on it; its grassy, umami base and pineapple flavouring is so up my alley that I practically inhaled it. It was a little finicky but I managed to get some pretty delicious steeps (and second steeps) out of it. It will be missed.

I love, love, love this tea. My “morning” (morning = when I wake up, which is not usually [technically] morning) matcha is pineapple juice + matcha but I find myself wanting pineapple & that japanese green tea taste later in the day so that’s why I crafted this tea. I wanted something that I could drink later in the day that wouldn’t keep me quite as alert as matcha.

It’s so delicious and refreshing! I hope you play with Japanese Sencha again in the future; it’s rare and unique to find a flavoured blend that incorporates this kind of Japanese green tea.

I’ve never mixed pineapple juice with matcha and I need to remidify that asap :)

You should definitely try Matcha with pineapple juice. It’s so good! Like I said, that’s my first thing in the morning drink. Helps me shake the sleepy plus I wake up with congestion every day, all year round (thank you, whacked out allergies) and the pineapple juice helps cut through that. So, on the rare days when I’m out of pineapple juice – it’s a sad day and I need to go to the grocery to remedy that. I probably will work more with Japanese Sencha because I really liked the flavor it brought to this drink. I did use some in this month’s featured reblend too (that’s the reason I bought the Japanese Sencha to begin with) but since I had plenty left over, I decided to make this pineapple sencha. But since it worked out great, I may have to try some other flavors with it. :)

Anne – you have bad allergies all the time AND YET can craft all of these flavors??? That is amazing.

52Teas 3 years ago

@tea-sipper – thank you. I have to take a daily allergy tablet to keep them under control. And I get my congestion every day – I wake up congested every morning. Which is why I must turn to the pineapple juice (bromelain is magical).

I second what tea-sipper wrote :)

So, this isn’t a sipdown (thankfully because I love this tea) but it is the tea that I’m going to log as a Green Tea from this month’s Scavenger Hunt. It’s a brand new tea from 52Teas (just added it to the website, actually) and it’s a tea that was inspired by my morning matcha drink which is pineapple juice & matcha – shaken, not stirred. :)

I love that morning matcha drink & I wanted to duplicate it as close as I could to be something I could drink later in the day (because Matcha is much too invigorating for me to drink too late in the day.)

I think I managed to put something together here that works for my cravings for my pineapple tea. The Japanese Sencha is smooth & fresh while the pineapple gives it just the right sweet-tart flavor I want. I love this tea. I hope others like it as well because I’m already thinking that I’ll need to reblend this when it’s gone from my pantry.
