Tea of the Week for August 13, 2018!

August 18 is my youngest daughter’s birthday so for her “birthday week”, I let her decide on what tea I should make and this is the flavor combination she came up with. Not a surprise, really, since one of her favorite treats from our favorite bakery is the Raspberry Cheesecake with Lemon Swirl.

I felt that an organic green tea blend (Chun Mee, Gunpowder & Yun Wu) would make a good base for these flavors, because it’s sweet and smooth with just a hint of bitterness that would compliment the lemon-y flavors well.

This is really nice – a forward cream cheese note with a sweet-tart raspberry and lemon finish – and it’s organic, VEGAN, gluten-free and allergen-free

organic ingredients: green teas, raspberries, lemons, lemon balm & natural flavors

We’re getting dumped on with far too much snow to make me happy in March (to be fair, I’m not happy about tons of snow any other time of the year, either!) which make me want to reach for something robust or roasty… instead I’m checking off the “green tea” prompt from the sipdown list this month. (Perhaps I can vicariously live out a nice spring day that way?!)

My steeped cup smells a bit strong on the lemon than the berry, though I can make out some raspberry on the nose. To taste, mostly I’m getting a fresh, bright, pithy lemon note, which blends nicely with the base. The base looked a bit gunpowder heavy to me, which is not a green tea I favor much, but the ashy taste I get from it is completely gone under the smooth and bright citrus, leaving just a mellow earthy/vegetal backdrop. I’m not really getting the raspberry much, if at all… there is a fruity sweetness to the cup, and I do get a whisper of a berry note as an aftertaste from the swallow.

I would’ve liked the berry to pop more, but I’m always down for a strongly citrus green… even when the weather doesn’t want to cooperate with that choice.

Now that I’m at work and my travel thermos is in sippable range, I’m finding the raspberry popping a lot more!

This tea sounds like a delicious concept. Creamy raspberry lemon? Yesssssssss.

Crowkettle

Yeah, there aren’t enough “Raspberry Cream” teas around. There’s an unfilled niche (ex- Raspberry Lemon Danish, Raspberry Sundae, Raspberry Creamsicle, etc)! ;)

This is the first tea I’m trying from the mystery bags I ordered. I couldn’t resist the mystery! Anyway, the first brew of this one tasted like salty cheese. Not cream cheese; more like cheddar. It was super strange, but not horrible. The second steep was quite a pleasant lemon green tea. It’s interesting how different the two steeps of the same leaves were. I made it again today, making sure to get a lot of fruit in with the leaves, and that improved the flavor of the first steep, though I still didn’t love it. So I wouldn’t necessarily recommend this one due to the cheesiness, but the second steep was very nice…it was certainly an interesting one!

I swear I’ve reviewed this tea several times.

It does have a fairly strong tea base and I can taste the fruity lemon/citrus, there is a touch of raspberry also. Every cup I’ve had (5 or 6 now) I’ve been looking for the cheesecake and can’t find it anywhere. nothing vanilla, no creaminess, no cake/dessert flavour, no cream cheese flavour. I would have really like some graham cracker and some creamy rich cheesecake flavour, since that is what drew me to the blend. I think I would recommend a fruity milk oolong (dairy free, obviously) to bring out that sweet creamy flavour a bit. Even with milk it just isn’t quite there. The base is vegetal and lends some fruity flavour but not enough for a blend with this name. I’m not loving the base anyway, I don’t enjoy vegetal teas most of the time except jade oolongs and long jing.

This one is from Annie! Thanks so much for sharing it! I definitely wanted to try it. I love the idea of a raspberry lemon cheesecake. The bright raspberries look amazing in the blend and I made sure to get a lemon wedge in that cup. I really tried to steep the first steep short, so I could maximize the cheesecake flavor. However, there wasn’t any resulting cheesecake flavor at all (even though this was a 15gram original pouch and hardly old tea yet). The lemon is the strongest flavor here, with only hints of raspberry. The green tea is refreshing here, but then takes over in the second steep. Maybe I should have went with even shorter steeps. I’m also wondering what these flavors would have tasted like on a white tea base… with tons more cheesecake flavor.
It has been since early January since I’ve made any tea purchases, so two months (Lupicia). That means I’m holding to my word so far this year with less tea purchases. I feel bad for not supporting the tea shops though! But I will stay strong.
Steep #1 // 1 heaping teaspoon for a full mug // 32 minutes after boiling // 2 minute steep
Steep #2 // 30 minutes after boiling // 2-3 minute steep

Is the tasting note dashboard stuck again? No new notes for six hours that I’m seeing.

tea-sipper

Wait, and this note had other comments before.

Kittenna

Maybe nobody wrote notes? I just wrote a note and it’s appearing, but it could just be for me.

Kittenna

Good for you for not purchasing! I’m trying to be strong, too – it’s so hard, especially being on Steepster!

tea-sipper

Oh WAIT. I was remembering Anne replying, but that was to the Blueberrie-zzz today. So yeah, no comments on this tea today. Whoops.

Also finished this one off during the course of the afternoon. This one just needed to be more raspberry cheesecake, while most of the time i was more green lemon tea with a little tartness. Not a bad tea, but not my favourite of the 52 teas :)
