Drink (Don't Eat!) Grapefruit Sugar Scrub

I’ve noticed that a lot of my reviews are pretty short. Unfortunately, this won’t be any different.
I just wrote one line. “grapefruit-y and ginger” I remember that this was thinner bodied than I expected, but that all flavors were present.
There are large pieces of grapefruit/ginger though and present/absence of those will affect the brew. I did enjoy eating the ginger afterward!

Wasn’t sure what to expect from this tea because grapefruit so often tastes quite bitter in tea blends, and I’m a little fickle when it comes to ginger but I have to say I was pretty pleasantly surprised by this one…

The oolong base is really smooth, and kind of faintly fruity and nutty which was pleasant. To be perfectly honest, I found neither the base or the grapefruit/ginger as impactful as I was originally expecting them to be flavour wise. Instead the grapefruit was really smooth and sweet, perhaps tempered by the sugared ginger? I actually didn’t taste a whole lot of the ginger until the aftertaste, when the grapefruit notes had waned a little bit. But even then I found it pretty pleasant; I think I didn’t mind it in this blend because it wasn’t really spicy at all. More a sweet ginger note like what you’d get in Ginger Ale? I’d call this one light to medium bodied overall with just the right balance of flavours to experience everything without feeling crowded by it. The star note, for sure, was the grapefruit though.

Really easy to drink, and I’m sure something that wont survive too long in my cupboard before being sipped down.

Love this! A couple years back (has it really been that long?) 52Teas created a brown sugar grapefruit tea that I really liked. I’ve tried grapefruit teas by other companies, but typically found they didn’t really taste like grapefruit at all and were usually pretty bland or bitter.

This tea reminds me of that last one that 52Teas created except it is made with an oolong base instead of white and has a touch of ginger. The ginger is brilliant. And, like the one before, it really tastes like sugared grapefruit. But, what really shines is the base. The oolong base is really nice. There is that slight mineral taste and perfectly smooth profile. Absolutely no bitterness. Wonderful!

I’m very disappointed that this is out of stock. Because…. this tea is AMAZING. I actually was just going to email Anne personally with my rave review instead of posting it, so I could get more, but then I saw it was out of stock – so have switched my efforts to garnering reblend support instead :D

Anyhow – the review. The oolong base is marvellous – creamy and rich, not a hint of astringency, just amazing deliciousness. The grapfruit flavouring is bang on but not astringent, like I’ve often tasted in grapefruit teas (a reason why I don’t seek them out). The crystallized ginger and oolong combine for an amazing brown sugar flavour that isn’t outright sweet, but adds so much depth here, it’s impressive. The ginger is just at that perfect level where you can taste it, but it’s not sour or overpowering. Everything combines for a level of brown sugary grapefruit oolong perfection.

In short, this is probably the best new tea I’ve tasted in a while, and I’m heartbroken that there aren’t any other reviews on here about it, because that means nobody will know how amazing this tea is! And sadly, I only have a taster pouch so I can’t really even spread the love!

Therefore it clearly needs to be reblended. :D

This VIT is “coming soon” to 52Teas. It was created for one of our VIPs who – while chatting with her about what kind of tea she wanted me to create – she told me an amusing story about how she loves grapefruit so much that she would often eat scoops of her grapefruit sugar scrub. Hey, it’s an all natural product and the ingredients are all edible.
Now, I didn’t go and grab a jar of the scrub to eat it to get an idea for the flavor. Instead, I cut a grapefruit in half and sprinkled it with the ginger honey crystals that I keep on hand at all times for when I catch a cold. YUM! I love the combination of grapefruit and ginger so I decided that we had to make this tea!
I used a Phoenix Dan Cong Oolong as the base – which was requested by our VIP – and added dried grapefruit sections, ginger root, crystallized (sugared) ginger and natural flavors.
This is really yummy. The grapefruit is bright and tangy but not too tart. The ginger cuts through some of that bitter, tarty flavor of the grapefruit and gives it a pleasant peppery taste. It’s tangy, sweet and zesty. The Oolong – which is usually more of a fruity tasting Oolong – adds a nice nutty flavor to the cup that was a little unexpected but certainly tasty.
