From 52teas

I’m late… I’m late…

I really am behind this week. My apologies to our followers. I went to a “Get Motivated” seminar this week, so hopefully some of what I heard will sink in. In the meantime, without further ado, and hopefully totally worth the delay, here’s our newest tea of the week!

I decided to try to create one of our very popular cheesecake blends with a GREEN tea this week. Our buttery sweet Chinese sencha seemed a good fit for a cheesecake tea, and wow did it prove out. This is light and delicious and decadent all at once. Enjoy!

Our Tea of the Week for the Week of July 25th, 2011

Sipdown!

We had a good run, cherry cheesecake green.
You were tasty. Creamy and sweet!

Sil

Man this sounds like it would have been good. Well before my steep steer days though heh I’d guess

Daisy Chubb

I definitely feel like I’ve had it forever – it’s been about a year I think lol. Talk about savouring, oh my!

I don’t know if anyone has really noticed, but I have begun waiting at least three weeks after a tea has been released from 52Teas before trying it. Back when I was blending teas, I learned that when flavoring teas, the tea that I flavor today will taste different three weeks from today. The flavoring oils need time to absorb into the tea leaves and they need to mingle with the tea leaves and develop.

This is the only explanation I can come up with for the fact that the other reviews on this tea are stating that they can’t taste the cherry and cheesecake. Because I can taste them… and this is AWESOME. It tastes so good that I’m on my third cup right now.

The cherry is soft but authentic. It tastes like sweetened, glazed cherries but fortunately not like cherry cough drops. (Not that I dislike cherry cough drops, when I need a cough drop that’s the kind I reach for, but, I’d rather not have it in my tea). The cheesecake flavor is tangy and I can even taste the crust. It works. It all works so well together. YUM yum YUMMY!

Dorothy

That is very interesting, I didn’t know flavoring could work like that! :)

Daisy Chubb

What a great idea Liberteas, thank you!! I will do the same for SURE.
I had this one as a sample, so I thought it tasted amazing as well! It was def aged around 3 weeks so I bet this will work with my pumpkin cheesecake one too >_> Thank you for your wisdom!!

Nicole

Good to know about the flavorings. I’ll try my pumpkin cheesecake like this, too!

Ashley Bain

I haven’t had this in quite a while, I’ll have to give it another go and see if the flavors have developed.

WOW. okay so this sample is from ages ago. How did I miss it?!
Thanks Jenn for sending me some to try!!

So drinking this naked, all I get is plain ol’ green tea. Bummer!!!
okay, adding sugar. Hang on…
Hmmm, yes I think I taste some Cheesecake notes. Faint, but there is something there! Like the aftertaste of a mouthful of delicious cheesecake. Oh yes, this is not bad!
Now that I only have a few sips left, there is a hint of cherry coming out as well. Cherries jubilee. Not the tart kind… more like the preserves.
Verdict: While I am quite enjoying this tea, I don’t really like that I had to add more than a teaspoon of sugar to get my flavour notes. I’m fine with adding a little pinch of sweetener, but after that I find teas to be a bit cloying and I end up super thirsty afterwards.
This makes me a bit sad because I love cherries and anything cherry flavoured (except medicine!)
I think there is enough to try this iced. Perhaps that will rock my world?

Gosh dangit! Same goes for this tea as the new Cashew Turtle. Smells amazing, but tastes only like the base tea. These are nothing like any of the many other 52 teas I own. All of the rest are bold in dessert flavors and knock my socks out of this world. This just tasted like green tea. What the heck? :( This one’s lacking even more in flavor than the Cashew Turtle. :’( I really wanted to love this too!

Edit
I put my remaining pot of this in the refrigerator and I have to say it’s not so bad iced, especially with a bit of raw honey, but according to my taste buds it’s lacking completely in cherry and cheesecake. Doesn’t seem to deliver on the name, but not a bad iced tea.

If I remember right, this and cashew turtle are two of the newer 52Teas…you could try setting them aside for a few weeks to flavour up before giving them another shot. It takes so long for my orders to get here that they’ve usually had time for the flavours to mingle.

Or you could put them up for swaps if you really don’t want to leave them sitting around. I have the lemon lime cheesecake and am still broken hearted that i can’t get cheesecake flavour from it. I also really want a slice of cheesecake now… : )

Ashley Bain

That’s a good idea, let it sort of cure.
All of Frank’s cheesecake flavors seem to have that same reaction. I’ve wondered about it.. I have two of them (Coconut Cheesecake Honeybush and Lemon Lime Cheesecake,) and I’m happy with them. I taste as much cheesecake as I think is possible.. maybe a lot of the perception of the taste of a cheesecake is about the mouthfeel? Because I’ve tried to imagine what the flavor of cheesecake would be like in a flavoring agent and it seems that a lot of what we know as cheesecake would be lost. Maybe. I’m having a hard time explaining what I mean. lol.

Ashley Bain

Another thing.. all cheesecakes are different. Some tangier, some sweeter, some have different crusts, here’s a good reference of all the different kinds http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cheesecake The only cheesecake I’ve ever really enjoyed was the kind that I made, (I love to cook.) They can just be so vastly different. So maybe that makes transforming it into a flavoring agent more complicated?

Bleh. Just not enjoying this at all. It tastes like… old cheesecake. I dunno what I did wrong, so back in the cupboard it goes to marinate some more.

Anna

Was it at least old cherry cheesecake? =(

Fjellrev

Yikes. :/

MissB

Nope, no cherry this time either. I’ve shared a tiny bit with some of you to see if I’m on crack, or at least if my tastebuds are.

Dustin

I only enjoy this one iced. Have you tried it that way?

Backlog from yesterday

I got this in the mail yesterday and was super excited as I’m digging the flavored Genmaichas. I was a little nervous about the cherry flavor as cherry flavor often reminds me cough medicine and I absolutely hate cough medicine. I cannot take it. Yuck. Anyway, this doesn’t have any kind of cough mediciney taste at all. In fact, the cherry flavor is really good. This will definitely make it into my nighttime rotation.

Thanks to Liberteas – I get to try this one!!!

The likeness to cheesecake in this tea – especially texture-wise – is marvy! The Cherryis VERY subtle but tasty. In a way I can understand why Frank didn’t overdue it with the cherry as cherry flavors tend to over power or the flavoring tends to taste like syrup so I totally understand the thought behind this one…or…perhaps it’s just MY thought behind this one, but regardless this is tasty eventho I would love more cherry I understand why there isn’t more…if that makes sense.

YUM!

This is my second from 52teas and again the smell matches the name.

However, I’m not too sure of or big on the taste. It’s strong on green tea and after you swallow you get the touch of cherry cheesecake through your nose, but it’s not really in the taste of the tea itself.

I didn’t finish testing it until it was cool, as tea shows different aspects at different temps… sometimes one I am not big on hot is yummy cooler. But not with this, it got more green and bitter as it cooled and I couldn’t finish the cup.

What a bummer I wanted to try this one.

Ashley Bain

I got the same :( This isn’t how Frank’s teas normally are at all. I’m so surprised.

SSTTB: Pick #14

I’ve had the Genmaicha version of this and wasn’t really a fan because the flavour didn’t come through at all, but I can visibly see a ton of cherries in the dry leaf for this one so I thought I’d give it a chance and try it anyway since I have the opportunity to.

I’ve had good success before with cold brewing Frank’s green blends so that was the route I took with this one, and I’ve strained it now this morning and am currently sipping on it while I do my make up and wait for Tyrell to come pick me up for Barcraft. It’s not really that’s is bad, it’s just that like I suspected there’s not much flavour to it at all; mostly I’m getting vegetal (maybe even a little bitter) green tea, some very faint generic fruitiness and a super subtle cheesecake kind of “tang”. There’s nothing distinct to it what so ever.

I’m definitely feeling like 25 oz. of this is too much so whatever I don’t finish by one will almost certainly get dumped out. It’s sad too because I have a hunch that this one is going to be my only tea all day…

Have fun at Barcraft!
