Beantown Tea & Spices

Lexia Aleah kindly shared this Beantown chai with me some time ago and I have inadvertently neglected it. However, with a welcome cold snap and two delicious days of drought-breaking rain, I have been on a chai kick.

The base tea reminds me of my beloved PG Tips—tiny little CTC nuggets that steep up strong: enough so that I had to abandon my intention to drink it straight and a little extra water and sugar.

I’m getting gentle hints of all the spices mentioned in the product description—sometimes when sharing small, mailable packets, it’s hard to fit in a representative sample of all the extra non-tea goodies. But I’ll give it the benefit of the doubt. Fresh out of the tin, this is no doubt a straight-up, well-balanced, classic chai.

Sunny and hot here, using lunch break to hit solar noon and make some vitamin D! That cold snap is heading our way, I guess, but I am liking things the way they are for now!

Last week went from a record low of 24 Monday morning to afternoon highs of 85 on Sunday.

5g, 200f brita filtered water, 130 mL gaiwan

I ordered this as a sample from Beantown. I guess you could say “malty and full-bodied with a rich peppery finish”, or you could just be more direct and say bitter and tastes like a tea bag earl grey (and for the price of looseleaf I would recommend going for bagged instead). A weird aftertaste that’s drying and almost sweet but not quite. Disappointed, considering I used lower temps than suggested and brewed for less time than suggested by Beantown. Didn’t finish the tea, and used the rest of my sample to de-odorize my mini-fridge from the time I accidentally left turkey in there.

One more thing to note, though I don’t know whether this is of legitimate concern or not (maybe someone more experienced with teas can chime in here):
I stumbled upon Hobbes’ (Half-Dipper) blog post on pesticides in tea a few months back (https://half-dipper.blogspot.com/2013/09/pesticide-its-whats-for-dinner.html). While I have seen plenty of saponin froth from brewing yanchas, like Hobbes notes, the froth doesn’t stick and the tea is clear usually after the first infusion or two. This tea was the first time I’ve seen froth that sticks to the edge of my gaiwan’s lid, even after several infusions (which I did not drink), and does stick to my strainer when poured through. Granted that Beantown makes no claims as to organic farm sourcing for the great majority of their offerings, this being one of them, this is still somewhat concerning. I’m not a health nut and drink mostly not organic-certified teas (though I do like supporting smaller farming co-ops and families sourcing organic teas), since it’s not like I’m consuming the leaves directly (ignoring matcha, for which I would pay a premium for JAS certified organic standards).

I don’t doubt that farmers do use plenty of pesticides on a good deal of exported tea, and I know some locals don’t even drink tea from certain growing regions since they can see firsthand how dirty some areas can be, but I suppose this is just a reflection me being uncomfortable with being confronted with the reality directly.

As a side note on Beantown, the customer service is good and plenty of people love their offerings but my experience with my order just served to remind me why I avoid places that focus on flavored teas and blends (of course, this is coming from my personal preferences). I was not particularly impressed with any of the teas I ordered from them, save for the Chai (though chai tea is straightforward enough to make at home).

Got it as part of Beantown’s sampler pack, not a favorite. Looked kinda pretty though! Made a bit of a color gradient in a clear cup.

Ordered a sample from Beantown. Ordered because it was caffeine free, and not too bad, but I’m not sure what Rooibos is supposed to taste like in general. I was planning to find a non-caffeinated tea for before bed, but the cinnamon makes it a little too spicy for a bedtime drink.

Part of sampler pack from Beantown. Nothing special. Tastes no different from an Earl grey tea bag, so no point in paying premium for loose leaf necessarily. Even with chai spice mix added, had a sharp and somewhat unpleasantly bitter note (though maybe chai and EB tea don’t mix the best).

Got this as part of the sample pack from Beantown. Tastes exactly the same as the Harney and Son’s Earl Grey tea bags in the little light sky blue sachets, nothing special here.

Got this as part of the sample pack from Beantown. My cup turned out pretty bitter so I couldn’t pick out any of the notes they described, but it was palatable with milk and sugar added.

I received a free sample of this from Beantown a few days ago. I finished the whole cup, but it’s not my favorite. It smelled and tasted like smarties (the candy) to me. But, I’m glad I got to try it!

I totally know what you mean, I have a sakura white tea that absolutely tastes like cherry-blossom-flavored Smarties… XD

Sample sipdown.

The dry leaves smell like brown sugar.

Brewed: There is a slight dessert like taste to it. It tastes like brown sugar or maple sugar. I didn’t add anything to it. The flavor of the black tea comes through pretty well. It is light and not too acidic like most black teas.
